Transplantation Research Initiative: Background

The Institute of Infection and Immunity along with other partner institutes within CIHR were instrumental in helping to build the Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program (CDTRP), formerly the Canadian National Transplant Research Program (CNTRP). In 2010, the Advisory Board of the Institute of Infection and Immunity identified solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as a field in which strategic investment and targeted programming could improve clinical outcomes.

III organized a consultation workshop to obtain advice and input from members of the transplantation research community and interested partner organizations.

The CIHR Program Grant in Transplantation Research was developed in response to the workshop recommendations and in partnership with key organizations in the transplantation community:

In April 2013, under the CIHR Program Grant in Transplantation Research, the Canadian National Transplant Research Program was born. It received $13.8M from CIHR and its partners as a 5-year grant to support the formation, operations and research activities.

During that 5-year period from 2013 to 2018, the CDTRP leveraged $37M, involved more than 200 researchers and 30 sites within Canada resulting in several impactful projects, activities and other partnerships, with the result of tangible benefits to the transplant community and transplant patients.

In 2017, improving the organ donation and tissue transplantation system in Canada was identified as a priority in the Minister of Health’s mandate letter.

In October 2018, CIHR renewed its commitment to CDTRP with a joint operational grant of $3.3 million for three years. Learn more in the funding announcement.
