CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes: Questions and Answers
1. What is the purpose of the CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes?
The CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes will honour and celebrate Canadian discoveries as well as our best and brightest health researchers who are making a difference in the lives of Canadians. The prizes cover achievements across all pillars of research (biomedical, clinical, health services and policy, and population and public health). They will be awarded to individuals or teams, except for the CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Outstanding Achievements by an Early Career Investigator, which will always go to an individual.
2. What happened to CIHR's previous prize programs, such as the Health Researcher of the Year?
CIHR has redesigned its prize programs to recognize and celebrate the most outstanding health research achievements in the categories below. These prizes are among the highest honours bestowed for excellence in health research and incorporate and expand the kinds of achievements celebrated with CIHR's legacy prize program.
- CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Impact: Awarded to an individual or team for health research with a proven impact on health outcomes, practices, policies and/or on the health system.
- CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Discovery: Awarded to an individual or team whose research findings are unique, inspirational, and break new ground, significantly influencing knowledge in their field.
- CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Outstanding Achievements by an Early Career Investigator: Awarded to an investigator at the beginning of their career who shows great potential and is expected to continue to produce research of exceptional merit.
- CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Transformation: Awarded for transformative leadership in a given CIHR priority area. In 2018, the Transformation prize will be awarded for outstanding leadership in patient engagement in research.
3. What is the value of the CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes?
Each prize has a value of $100,000. Winners also receive a medal.
4. How often will the CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes be awarded?
The prizes will be awarded every two years.

9. How are the prize winners chosen?
Prize winners will be selected by a Gold Ribbon Panel comprised of individuals with a broad array of expertise who are able to assess excellence and impact across all four CIHR health research theme areas: biomedical, clinical, health services and policy, and population and public health.
10. When will the winners be selected?
The winners of the CIHR Gold Leaf Prizes will be selected by the Gold Ribbon Panel in February 2019. The public announcement of the winners and medal presentations will occur at an awards ceremony at a later date.
