Development Grants for Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR)

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is planning to launch a request for applications for Development Grants for Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR).

This funding opportunity aims to address the CIHR strategic research priority area of Health and Wellness for Aboriginal Peoples by establishing a solid foundation for Indigenous health research driven by and grounded in Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) communities in Canada. This will be accomplished by supporting 12 one-year development grants, which will bring together Indigenous Peoples/Communities/Organizations and other members of the research team, including researchers, knowledge-users and/or partners, to undertake initial planning and proposal development in preparation of an anticipated future CIHR full NEIHR Network  grant RFA.

The Development Grants will provide support for proposal preparation activities, community personnel support, and travel support to attend gatherings of Indigenous communities, researchers, knowledge users, stakeholders, and/or partners. The expected development activities include a preliminary review of the literature, and other information sources, along with a local and/or regional assessment to determine readiness, priority areas of interest and capacity within the community to develop a full NEIHR application to CIHR.

Looking ahead, the expected next step will be the launch of the full NEIHR Network grants RFA, which at a minimum, will support one grant based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic, and at least one grant based in the Yukon or the Northwest Territories or Nunavut. Furthermore, one of the funded NEIHR grants will have the opportunity to serve as a national/international NEIHR coordinating centre for all of the funded NEIHR grants. This National/International NEIHR Coordinating Centre will need to liaise with the National/International CIHR Indigenous Mentorship Network (IMN) Coordinating Centre.

This request for applications is expected to:

  • Enable First Nations, Inuit, Métis and Urban Indigenous communities to determine readiness, priority areas of interest and capacity within relevant communities to create an Indigenous health research network;
  • Assess the viability of a research network and a partnership of creating a capacity building network among First Nations, Inuit, Métis and Urban Indigenous communities and potential team members including researchers, knowledge-users and/or partners;
  • Identify the research aim, objectives and/or questions or emerging issues and priorities that could form the basis of a full NEIHR Network  grant application;
  • Enable Indigenous Peoples and other members of the research team to engage in development efforts to successfully compete for a full NEIHR Network grant;

Funds available

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $ 900,000, enough to fund approximately 12 grants.

The maximum amount per grant is $ 75,000 per year for up to 1 year.
