Pre-announcement: Team Grant: Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples (Pathways) Implementation Research Teams Component 3

The Pathways Implementation Research Teams Component 3 Funding Opportunity supports the overall goal of the Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples (Pathways) Signature Initiative, which is to develop a better understanding of how to design and implement equitable reach, access and sustainability of population health interventions that will improve Indigenous (i.e., First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) health and health equity. While components 1 and 2 of this initiative dealt with designing interventions, Component 3 will focus on implementing interventions. Reach, access and sustainability of interventions can take on different forms such as: (1) implementing an intervention that is adaptable to changes in the immediate environment; (2) implementing the intervention among other individuals, groups and/or populations; (3) integrating the intervention with other pre-existing interventions; and (4) adopting the intervention as an organizational practice, program and/or policy. The focus of research supported through this funding opportunity will be on population health interventions, defined as policies, programs and resource distribution approaches that have the potential to impact health and health equity at a population level across the life course. There are four exemplars of focus: mental wellness, diabetes/obesity, tuberculosis, and oral health.

Implementation Research Teams (IRTs) will be comprised of researchers and knowledge users, including Indigenous community members and knowledge holders.

The specific objectives of Request for Applications are to:

  • Increase the equitable reach, access and sustainability of culturally appropriate population health interventions using an implementation science approach
  • Develop and share recommendations, guidelines and policies for sustainability and enhanced equitable reach and access of interventions that incorporates reciprocal learning between participating Indigenous communities and research teams
  • Build capacity for implementation research in Indigenous communities by training and mentoring junior researchers through partnerships with communities, including students and trainees with Indigenous living experience, and community members.
