Combined New Investigators’ Meeting and Community-Based Research Capacity-Building Workshop 2018
Call for Expression of Interest

From December 6 to 7, 2018 in Victoria, British Columbia, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH) will be hosting the combined New Investigators’ Meeting (NIM) and Community-Based Research Capacity-Building Workshop (CBRCBW) in collaboration with the Métis National Council (MNC).

The annual NIM brings Indigenous health researchers at an early stage of their academic careers together with community members, established researchers and partners from across IIPH mandate areas. This year, the NIM will be combined with the CBRCBW that will focus on Métis health research and assist participants interested in community-based research in strengthening their research careers. Through this event, participants will be provided with an opportunity to make connections with other New Investigators, community members, established researchers, and representatives from the MNC and Métis Nation Governing Members who will be participating as speakers, and mentors.

Any interested individuals who would like to receive an invitation from CIHR to participate in this event should send an Expression of Interest (EOI) to CIHR.

Objectives of the Combined NIM and CBRCBW are:

  • To learn why Métis are a distinct people;
  • To explore Métis holistic approaches, rooted in Métis culture and history, in order to promote health and wellness, and reduce the burden of illness among Métis;
  • To learn Métis-specific health models and how health and wellness is perceived in Métis communities;
  • To learn health research within a Métis context—past, present and future—and, in particular, Métis research priorities and projects, gaps, challenges and opportunities while working in partnership with the Métis Nation; and
  • To come away with culturally-informed strategies and actions that can help to promote Métis health and wellness, and participatory research, increase Métis evidence and reduce health disparities in Canada.

Interested individuals who would like to receive an invitation from CIHR to participate in this event should answer the questions below in an email the IIPH Project Coordinator by October 31, 2018.

CIHR will only respond to those EOI applicants who are invited to attend the workshop with the registration instructions. These invitees will be responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation expenses to attend the Workshop.
