Six world-class research teams to investigate new frontiers in neurobiology

Together with our partners the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Azrieli Foundation, and the Israel Science Foundation, we are pleased to announce the recipients of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program’s fourth call for proposals.
These world-class research teams will direct their focus on new frontiers in neurobiology. Selected from among 45 proposals, the six winning teams will receive funding totaling up to CA$7 million over the next three years. They will be based in leading institutions in Canada and Israel and will include collaborators from seven developing countries.
The research teams will use cutting-edge technologies to investigate the underlying neuro-electrical and cognitive mechanisms of prevalent neurological conditions such as chronic pain, autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and cortical blindness.
Research results are expected to advance our knowledge of the basic biological mechanisms underlying mental illness. In addition, results may expand treatment options for neurological conditions and eventually guide policy development, program planning, and the provision of mental health services.
The research teams will integrate researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, India, Mexico, and Nepal to further their scientific capacity. As collaborators or trainees, these researchers will contribute to, and benefit from, their involvement in the program with the overall aim of strengthening research capacity in their countries, promoting research excellence, and building long-lasting international scientific relationships.
The Joint Canada-Israel Health Research program will support another call in 2018. This fifth call, to be launched in October 2018, will support research in the field of metabolism in health and disease. Selected projects will be announced in the summer of 2019.
