Message from Dr. Rick Glazier – February 2019

As I begin my term as the fourth Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR), it is a privilege and an honour to have this moment to reflect on IHSPR's many successes to date and the opportunities that lie ahead for our community.

Under the pioneering guidance of the Institute's first three Scientific Directors, Dr. Morris Barer, Dr. Colleen Flood, and Dr. Robyn Tamblyn, IHSPR has made significant gains on many fronts. Thanks to their exceptional leadership and perseverance, IHSPR is well-positioned to continue supporting our growing community of multi-disciplinary researchers who are interconnected across the country and conducting top-quality research relevant to policy and practice. I particularly want to acknowledge Dr. Robyn Tamblyn’s vision and leadership over the past eight years and thank her and IHSPR’s terrific staff for their guidance and support over the past several months of transition.

Research is producing many disruptive innovations that have the capacity to transform the way care is delivered and improve the outcomes that can be achieved, and there are new and exciting opportunities for our Institute to deliver on its mandate of supporting research that contributes to improved health systems. As a key input to inform the development of our Institute’s strategic plan and areas of focus over the next few years, I look forward engaging with patients and citizens, decision-makers, clinicians and researchers at all jurisdictional levels across the country to discuss how we can work together to benefit health services and systems and the health and quality of life of all Canadians.

The coming years hold great promise for the impact of health services and policy research. There are a wealth of opportunities to seize and important challenges to overcome, and I truly look forward to working together with CIHR, Institute staff, our research community and our many partners towards IHSPR's vision of outstanding health services and policy research to improve health system outcomes.
