Update on the CIHR Indigenous Mentorship Network Program
Aanii, Greetings, Hello,
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Indigenous Mentorship Network Program — a 5-year program launched in 2016 — contributes to building capacity for the next generation of Indigenous health researchers. It supports distinctive and culturally relevant cohort learning opportunities and tailored mentoring activities.
Engagement with a variety of Indigenous health research stakeholders and Indigenous community stakeholders in 2017 and 2018 demonstrated a strong desire to relaunch an enhanced NEAHR (Network Environments for Aboriginal Health Research) - like program in order to, at a minimum, continue and enhance support for the training, development and mentorship activities to Indigenous trainees and early career researchers. As a result, CIHR including its Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health as well as the other 12 Institutes launched the CIHR Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) Program in 2018. The NEIHR Program — a $100.8 million investment over 16 years — will establish a national network of centres focused on capacity development, research and knowledge translation. Consequently, CIHR will not relaunch the Indigenous Mentorship Network Program.
CIHR remains committed to providing mentorship environments that promote traditional Indigenous knowledges and cultural safety with the goal of engaging more First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Indigenous health research. We would like to thank the Indigenous Mentorship Networks, mentors and partners involved over the past years, and recognize their contributions and achievements in facilitating capacity development.
Miigwetch/thank you,
Dr. Tammy Clifford,
Vice-President, Research Programs, CIHR
