You may have noticed over the course of the last few months that INMD and partners have pre-announced new diabetes-related funding opportunities: the Netherlands-Canada Type 2 Diabetes Research Consortium and Accelerating Stem-Cell-Based Therapies for Type 1 Diabetes Team Grants. In addition, we have launched the UK-Canada Diabetes Research Team Grants.

These funding opportunities are all part of a larger strategic research initiative, 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes,developed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin in 2021. Many of you will remember that we engaged the diabetes research community and partner organizations in a Workshop in 2018, 100 Years of Insulin: What’s Next?. The goal of this workshop was to identify strategies to accelerate diabetes research in Canada.  This Workshop provided a conceptual foundation upon which to dialogue with potential partners towards development of strategic research funding opportunities that we could co-develop to mark this important moment in Canadian science.

I am delighted to announce that the CIHR Institutes of Genetics, Infection and Immunity, and Indigenous Peoples Health are co-leading 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes with INMD, with the collaboration of the Institutes of Aging, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health, Gender and Health, Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis and Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction.  We are also very pleased that several key stakeholders with a shared interest in diabetes and related complications are partnering in this initiative.  A great example of this is JDRF Canada, who are partnering with INMD to support the Team Grants to Accelerate Stem-Cell-Based Therapies for Type 1 Diabetes.

Through these new strategic investments in research we plan to build on the legacy of excellence in Canadian diabetes research.  Please stay tuned to the INMD newsletter and check our website regularly for updates since we will soon announce additional funding opportunities.
