Support for research trainees at Canadian institutions
April 22, 2020
Canada’s three federal research granting agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)—are committed to supporting trainees and fellows at all levels who are interested in pursuing careers in research. This support is provided through specific targeted research training programs administered by each agency as well as through targeted Tri-agency trainee and fellowship programs (e.g., Canada Graduate Scholarships, Vanier Scholarships, Banting Fellowships). Support is also provided indirectly through the various grant programs for investigators.
The agencies recognize the vital role that highly qualified talent plays in the research enterprise, and the need to sustain the talent pipeline during the major disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The agencies therefore applaud the recent announcement from the Government of Canada, which introduces new measures to assist research trainees and staff, impacted by the unprecedented crisis: Support for students and new grads affected by COVID-19.
The agencies will supply further details on the specific measures announced and the implications for our respective research communities as this information becomes available. Please check our websites (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) and social media feeds regularly for updates.
