Biography

Dr. Rastegar is a Professor of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the University of Manitoba, and a scientist member of Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. She obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the "Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL)”, Brussels, Belgium. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2009, Dr. Rastegar completed postdoctoral trainings at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, McGill University in Montréal, and at the Indiana University-Purdue University in USA.

Dr. Rastegar’s research program is focused on the role of epigenetics in stem cell differentiation, brain development, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Through a combination of murine and human in vivo and in vitro systems, her lab studies the molecular mechanisms leading to compromised brain function in neurodevelopmental disorders, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and Rett Syndrome (RTT). Her lab applies molecular biology techniques and gene therapy strategies in stem cells, performs neural stem cell modelling of neurological disorders, as well as pre-clinical studies in transgenic mice.
