CIHR congratulates the 2022 Canada Gairdner Award Laureates

The Gairdner Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2022 Canada Gairdner Awards.
The Canada Gairdner Awards recognize some of the world’s most significant biomedical and global health research and discoveries. This year we made history with four of seven awards going to Canadian researchers – the largest number of Canadians to receive these awards in the same year since they were created in 1957.
I wish to congratulate all of this year’s award recipients and give special recognition to the Canadian laureates.
- Dr. John Dick at the University Health Network’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre received a Canada Gairdner International Award for his discovery of leukemic stem cells and further insights that have improved the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia.
- Dr. Pieter Cullis at the University of British Columbia shared a Canada Gairdner International Award for his contributions to developing the technology responsible for the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.
- Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta at SickKids received the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award for developing and evaluating interventions in child and maternal health for marginalized populations.
- Dr. Deborah Cook at McMaster University received the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award for pioneering research that has developed and defined evidence-based critical care medicine in Canada and informed best practices around the world.
These researchers have shown us the power of health research to improve lives and make the world a better place. By receiving these prestigious international awards, they are helping advance Canada’s reputation as a home for world-class science and inspiring the next generation of health researchers in Canada and abroad.
