I am pleased to announce the results of funding that CIHR received through Budget 2021, which contained a recommitment to the JDRF-CIHR Partnership to Defeat Diabetes of up to $15M, to be matched by JDRF Canada and its donors, for a total research impact of $30M.

This new funding resulted in 3 new funding opportunities:

The results of these funding opportunities were recently announced in Toronto, where the Nominated Principal Investigator (NPI) of the CIHR-JDRF Type 1 Diabetes Screening Research Consortium, Dr. Diane Wherrett (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto) and her team were congratulated, along with Dr. Farid Mahmud, NPI of a T1D Precision Medicine Team Grant.  The objective of the Consortium is to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of T1D screening with the ability to inform implementation in the general population in Canada.  I look forward to learning about the work the Consortium will undertake and how they will engage people with lived experience of T1D.  I would encourage you to read more about this grant and all of the other grants that have been funded through our partnership with JDRF Canada.

On a final note, I want to acknowledge the leadership of JDRF President and CEO Dave Prowten, who recently announced that he will be retiring at the end of 2023 to spend more time with his family. His leadership has been instrumental in developing the CIHR-JDRF partnership that contributed to various components of the initiative, 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes.  I am grateful to Dave and his team for their ongoing partnership and their unwavering vision to fund excellent type 1 diabetes research in Canada.
