Biography
Amy Wong received her PhD at the University of Toronto in lung regeneration and completed her post-doctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Dr Janet Rossant and Dr. James Ellis (SickKids) where she pioneered the first directed differentiation protocol to generate mature proximal airway epithelia from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). She was one of the first to show that the hPSC-derived cultures can be used to study airway Cystic Fibrosis (CF) disease and test efficacies of new therapies (Wong et al., Nature Biotechnology 2012; Wong et al., Nature Protocols 2015; Ngan et al., Current Protocols 2022). Now she is internationally recognized as a pioneer in using human stem cells to model lung development and diseases. Her lab has three main research focus 1) Identify novel genetic and molecular factors regulating lung development; 2) Leverage iPSC-based models to identify novel therapeutic targets for airway diseases (ie. respiratory viral infections, CF); 3) Generate better preclinical lung mimetics using stem cells for disease modeling using novel bioprinting and microfluidic platforms.
