World Diabetes Day
Message from Dr. Norman Rosenblum
November 14, 2019
Canada is known throughout the world for the discovery of insulin, which occurred almost 100 years ago. The discovery of insulin is one of the most important discoveries in the history of medicine, and one of the most dramatic examples of rapid translation of a research discovery in basic science into a benefit for patients. While progress has been made in treating diabetes, the burden of diabetes on individuals, families, communities and health care systems is increasing in Canada and around the world.
Today, on World Diabetes Day, I am especially pleased to announce that CIHR and JDRF Canada are joining forces to fund research to accelerate stem cell-based therapies for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. Through an investment of $6M over 5 years to support Accelerating Stem Cell-Based Therapies for Type 1 Diabetes Team Grants, CIHR and JDRF Canada will build Canada’s research strength in stem cell-based therapies for the treatment type 1 diabetes. This investment will support two multidisciplinary research teams that will lead to clinical trials to move us a step closer to a time when people with type 1 diabetes will no longer need to take daily insulin injections.
I would like to thank JDRF Canada for their ongoing partnership and support of this exciting research. I would also like to recognize the efforts of Canadian researchers in advancing diabetes research across all themes, including basic science, clinical and health services research.
