CIHR is seeking members for its new Advisory Committee on Ethics
In particular, we are seeking members with ethics-related expertise and/or experience in the following areas: applied ethics, Indigenous health, social and cultural determinants of health, health equity and social justice, global health, infectious diseases, open science, pandemics, public health, genetics/genomics, paediatrics, mental health, artificial intelligence, and health services and policy.

This committee reports to the Vice President, Research - Learning Health Systems and is tasked with providing guidance to support CIHR’s commitment to ethics in health research, as set out in the CIHR Act and outlined in CIHR’s Strategic Plan.
More specifically, ACE will be responsible for:
- Providing advice on ethics priorities related to health researchFootnote 1 and related research practices.
- Providing strategic guidance to support CIHR’s commitment to systematically embed the consideration of ethics issues—and the application of ethics principles—into CIHR’s business, including the integration of ethics considerations across Strategic Plan priorities.
- Identifying emerging and re-emerging ethics issues in health research in Canadian and global contexts, informing CIHR about their significance, and recommending/suggesting pathways forward.
Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration, candidates will be assessed for their experience, knowledge and expertise in the area of ethics in health research.
Appointments to the committee will be made in a way that ensures:
- A strong and effective committee
- Transparency and fairness of process
- Breadth of experience
- Diversity of membership
The appointments will begin in fall 2023 for a term of three years; external members may be renewed for a second term of up to three years.
Time Commitment
The committee will meet up to three times per year. One meeting per year will be in-person/hybrid in Ottawa, while the other meetings will be held virtually. Ad-hoc meetings may be called by the co-chairs in response to emerging or timely issues related to the committee’s mandate. In addition, members will be invited to participate in sub-committee meetings, as required. A sub-committee is a small working group of committee members with the purpose of exploring and analyzing a specific ethics issue and providing advice and/or recommendation to CIHR.
Remuneration and Expenses
Travel and accommodation expenses incurred by members for in-person meetings will be reimbursed in accordance with the Government of Canada’s Treasury Board Guidelines. CIHR will also provide compensation for individuals with lived/living experience; more information is available upon request.
