Biography
Annie Descôteaux is head of the patient partner office at the Université de Montréal’s faculty of medicine and a strategic advisor at the Centre of Excellence on Partnership with Patients and the Public. She is one of the orchestrators of the social paradigm shift that is profoundly transforming relationships and models in health care and social services. Annie is responsible for recruiting and training patient partners to collaborate on research in health care environments and in medical education. She is co-chair of the Interfaculty Operational Committee for Collaborative Practice Teaching, which works in partnership with patients in 13 health and psychosocial sciences programs at the Université de Montréal.
Her daughter’s end-stage renal disease and other diagnoses led Annie to interact with the Quebec health system over a long period of time. These diagnoses triggered her interest in the skills and knowledge developed by patients whose illnesses are part of their daily lives. Annie is known as an international leader and expert in patient involvement in medical education. She is an advisor for a number of health organizations and has spoken at many national and international symposiums.
Annie has a bachelor’s degree in economics from York University and a master’s degree in education from UQAM. She is a member of the Quebec order of guidance counsellors. Annie is also a doctoral student in clinical ethics in the biomedical sciences program at the Université de Montréal’s faculty of medicine.
